Kantanka Automobile was established in 1994 by Apostle Dr. Ing. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, founder of the Kantanka Group of Companies. The year marked almost 14 years since the ace scientist and engineer had begun industrious research into tech, environmental, and food science. The quest into applied sciences and its social impact eventually guided the founder to car making as well.
In 1998, the first Complete Built Unit (CBU) was manufactured using over 75% of local components including the engine block. The first car of the company, although not for commercial purposes, was a great step indicating that much more could be done. The blue sedan (with Kantanka Star embossed on its grille) aroused the curiosity of many Ghanaians to the possibility of a local automobile industry.
Engineer Safo worked relentlessly at making the vision of a made-in-Ghana car on Ghanaian roads a reality. In 2004, Kantanka Automobile was incorporated as a Limited Liability Company to research into the manufacturing of automotive components and their combination with other parts outsourced from component suppliers to form a complete built unit.
By 2006, the first SUV (ONANTEFO) was manufactured. This time, Dr. Safo and his Kantanka company were way beyond prototype stages. The “Onantefo” meaning “Walker” was ready to face modern vehicles of its day. The glossy black vehicle was well-designed with strong cruise specifications for its driver and passengers.
Barely a decade later, the model, together with two others (Omama and K71) were out doored and announced commercially.
Kantanka Automobile remains a resilient economic force pioneering Ghana’s Automobile industry and leading Africa’s best in quality auto services.
